The UGR becomes a custodian entity of the traditional irrigation systems of Cáñar-Barjas, in La Alpujarra de Granada.

The rector of the University of Granada, Pilar Aranda, and the president of the Cáñar-Barjas Irrigation Community, Antonio Álvarez Guerrero, have signed an agreement by which the university becomes the custodian of the historical irrigation systems of this enclave of the Alpujarra of Granada.

This is the first land stewardship agreement in Spain to be signed by a university. Within the framework of this stewardship agreement, the University of Granada, through its Biocultural Archaeology Laboratory (MEMOLab), supports the governance and management of these spaces of high cultural and environmental value with volunteer campaigns, facilitation and dialogue between key actors, research and cataloging initiatives or shared search for funding sources for conservation, so that they remain active, healthy and sustainable.
